You neglect to state that they were also responsible for half of the world having dial tone (although I don't think it was quite that much...), when, before, there was none. But now you have my curiosity up, since Elmat never sets himself up with statements that you cannot, at least in your own mind, substantiate. Your retrospective prescription, putting yourself back in the period in order to retroactively move the state of the art along, would have been ... what? The only hopes for open networking prior to the age of digitization, fostered materially by the labs, was Ham radio. However, the last time I fired up a Ham rig the coverage that I could expect and depend on was rather limited, and spotty at that, often requiring one to observe times of day for "skip" quirks, Sun spots and the ever present lurking regulators who'd shut your shack down in a minute if you exceded permissible power levels on the final stages of your transmitter's output! |
