IMO, the right-wing campaign against "leftist bias" in academics is best seen in the light of the evolution issue.

IMO it isn't best seen in that light. Most of the people we are talking about aren't big proponents of "Intelligent Design" or opponents of evolution. That group exists as well but to the extent that they are focused on changes in education they are more focused on the primary and perhaps secondary level, not universities. They have some power in certain local jurisdictions but aren't really a powerful movement on the national level. The movement I am talking about is the movement against people who say things like "911 was justified", or "Israel and the US are evil nations", and also against the socialist left. There might be some overlap between this group and the ID supporters but they aren't really the same group.
