there are many alternatives to gas guzzling SUVs at this point, the VCs are funding Li ion batteries

And just how do you think that these greenie electric cars are going to get charged up? Large new numbers of carbon fueled power plants to be built? Not in CA with your new idiotic econut CO2 restrictions (which are going to drive even more businesses out of the state). Ethanol is a huge scam which uses more energy to produce than what it offers in the tank. Same with hydrogen, which doesn't grow on trees. Takes a lot of energy to make it. And no new nukes, oh no, can't have that! It'll be windmills and pipe dreams that fuel your new greenie utopia (LOL!!)

Cheap fuel prices have hampered new developments in energy for years.

Cheap fuel prices have enabled you to enjoy the cushy standard of living that you've grown accustomed to. Just see how long that that golden goose can continue to be slowly strangled without having to pay the consequences. Carbon based energy (oil, coal, nat gas) fuels the world economy and will continue to do so long after you're sprouting daisies. There are no economically viable alternatives and won't be in any meaningful numbers for the foreseeable future...
