Elmat, I trust and believe your accounts. That's not the point I was making, however.

I was giving transmission classes during the late Seventies when I had an Argentinian student in attendance who related horror stories that I found almost too difficult to believe. He told of his family being placed on a twelve-year waiting list to receive a telephone, only to have their hopes snatched from their grasp and being returned to the bottom of the list again, when, in the final months approaching their expected delivery date someone refused to pay a local official an extra pound of flesh.

My views of the progress that's been made since then can be gleaned from my last post to Grace, upstream, where I talk about the commoditization that's taken place. I think you will readily relate to the plug-and-play conditions I mentioned there, as apropos to the standardization of communications both domestically and internationally since then, which fits hand-in-glove with the progress you've cited.
