Vet, I have several times had the following experience:

1. My bid is 1/16 above MM
2. Someone enters a market sell order
3. MM takes the shares
4. Afterwards he is 1/16 below me again.

So I guess he must have that option. But even though our orders often are not executed, we save some money for the seller and the fact that the MM paid more supports the price.
