OK... conspiracy theory stuff follows, for what it's worth.

Assume you are the CEO of an oil company, and you are looking at the upcoming congressional election. The Dems are saying "conservation", the Reps are saying "tax breaks and exploration".

You have a fiduciary duty to the owners. You have the ability to influence (not manipulate, that would be illegal) the market price for your products. You have 80% of congress and 100% of the WH in your pocket because of contributions.

Conservation means much less profits... ultimately maybe 90% less.

I don't suppose the poor energy CEO would make a decision that was in the self interest of himself and his stock holders. A decision that would support the Reps in Congress.

No... I suppose the guy would be politically neutral. Right. He would choose the "environment".
