i don't think VLO is anywhere near breakeven. i think they are still doing quite well. but i will keep an open mind--where did you hear that?

meanwhile, Barron's shows once again that it is a Master of the Obvious and knows how to close the barn door after the horse has left:

"While the change [drop in gasoline prices] is a relief for motorists, share prices of independent refiners such as Valero Energy (ticker: VLO), Sunoco (SUN), Tesoro (TSO), Frontier Oil (FTO) and Western Refining (WNR) could suffer from a gasoline-price decline."

could suffer?
VLO's share price has already "suffered" a 25% loss in one month. but now Barron's tells us it's time to watch out. LOL

just once i'd like to see a bearish piece come out when prices are PEAKING.

but then, i have to remember that the function of the financial press is to always point to the rearview mirror, helping to ensure that the public always barks up the wrong tree. if these people could trade for a living, they wouldn't be writing dumb articles for 25 cents a word.

we as individual investors should be grateful for misinformation, which helps create the price inefficiencies that are the sine qua non of outperformance by small investors.

in any case, i consider the weakness a good opportunity to beef up my positions in cos like VLO. i added quite a bit at the end of the week to VLO and SU.

who knows--maybe VLO will come out with a warning and in the panic the stock sells down to the 30s or low 40s. if that happens, i will definitely take the gloves off.
