...something to the effect of, "I wish I could just wake up dead." Some times we find ourselves guessing what the person who has become incommunicado would want. I have had discussions with people who are in dire straights over their circumstance and who can find no personal benefit in going on with life. However, such dispondency can some times be attributed some transitory imbalance in body chemistry, or a life circumstance that seems overwhelming. The circumstances almost always change over time. People who are despondent with life on some days are at peace on others. In some cases the benefits of you 'going on' is to other people who need to have your support, encouragement, and role models that handle difficulty in a noble manner. I cannot condone the incarceration (institutionalization) of people who are in a hopeless state of suffering and pain, seemingly without personal choices. We are all at some point in time 'going down hill'; under hopeless circumstance, are there paths we can choose that are justified and noble? I like hospice but am not sure that is the answer to every situation. So this area remains grey for me.
