I was trying to give an illustration of how the pointy headed liberals labeled them because they lacked a perfected speaking ability which they implied was necessary to be a great leader.

There is a lot of both silliness and rancor in this fussing about the fussing about the way Bush expresses himself. It has always looked to me like the resentful reaction of people who feel they are being looked down upon, a typical non-productive schoolyard response.

Of course we assess people based on what they express themselves. That's our window into what's going on in their heads. The notion that we shouldn't do that is absurd. The question is only what elements of their expression we should consider and what determination we can legitimately make from them. Some elements, like accents, tell us nothing other than where that person grew up. Other elements, like stringing together logical sequences of sentences, are indicators of a logical and disciplined mind. IMO we would be foolish if we didn't assess candidates based on the quality of their minds. Others have different standards.

The issue behind this issue is what one wants in a president. Different people have different preferences. Some people want someone who is qualified by whatever standard they have. Other people want someone with whom they can identify. Others want someone who will push the issues they want pushed or provide the benefits to them that they want provided.

It seems to me that the fussing about the fussing about the president's speech comes from people whose idea of qualification is a guy with whom they would be comfortable sharing a six pack and resentment of anyone who they suspect wouldn't be caught dead with a six pack. That strikes me as a sorry reason for resentment and an even sorrier way to pick a president.
