He was on a bombing run against Germany. He wasn't carrying posies he was going to kill Germans. He died on the trip. Whatever happened, the cargo shifted, which seems ludicrous since they load that kind of thing so that it can be automatically offloaded, or he was shot down, he was killed in the war trying to kill Nazis.
