Trinity Industries 2Q Profit Nearly Quadruples, Beating Wall Street Estimates

DALLAS (AP) -- Diversified industrial company Trinity Industries Inc. said Wednesday its second-quarter profit nearly quadrupled as the company's railcar and barge sales increased.
The company earned $85.8 million, or $1.08 per share, compared with $21.8 million, or 29 cents per share, a year ago. The recent quarter's results included a gain of 9 cents per share from the sale of property.

The results surged past Wall Street expectations, with analysts polled by Thomson Financial expecting earnings of 65 cents per share.

Revenue increased 23 percent to $883.8 million from $718 million, versus the analyst consensus of $858 million.

Order backlogs continued to grow, the company said. More than 10,012 railcar orders were received in North America during the quarter and 6,233 were shipped. The backlog grew by 3,700 cars from the previous quarter to 29,320. The barge group's backlog grew to $487 million during the quarter.

Shares of Trinity Industries rose 85 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close at $33.57 on the New York Stock Exchange. In aftermarket activity, they added another $1.38, or 4.1 percent, to $34.95. The stock has ranged between $22.97 and $47.70 over the past year.<<
