Point taken but if we are to pull out in the face of this political defeat at least in sunni controlled areas, we have to ask ourselves about the terrible consequences of another al queda state such as afganistan was in the heart of the Mideast. Another lesson of vietnam is what happens when you fight a war with one hand tied behind your back. If we inevitably are going to lose politically regardless of any care we take to avoid civilian casualties, why bother in the future. That might be the lesson of iraq down the road. Assymetric warfare works both ways when the gloves are taken off. I am not advocating such a course now, but I bet than in a future punctuated by more 9/11s, some will insist on it. Anbar as a nuclear wasteland sounds a hell of a lot better than as a training ground for folks who are dedicated to carrying out terror attacks.
