UPDATE 1-RESEARCH ALERT-Credit Suisse ups chip sector
Tue Sep 12, 2006 8:42am ET
(Changes source, adds details)

Sept 12 (Reuters) - Credit Suisse raised the semiconductor equipment sector to "overweight" from "market perform", saying that memory spending will remain stronger longer than most investors expect.

The brokerage also upgraded Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to "outperform" from "neutral, but reiterated its "outperform" on Lam Research Corp. (LRCX.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and said it was restricted on Kla Tencor Corp. (KLAC.O: Quote, Profile, Research).

On Applied Materials, Credit Suisse said checks suggest a pick up in order activity from memory companies was improving the company's visibility and raised its price target to $20 from $18.

The brokerage maintained its price target of $49 on Lam Research and said valuations offer substantial upside on the stock.

Credit Suisse also raised its 2007 capital expenditure estimate to 6.7 percent from 2.7 percent.

The brokerage believes that half of the world's memory capacity is still on an ageing fleet of chips which need to be replaced soon and memory chips are diversifying away from personal computers into niche areas like handsets, games and other specialty memories.
