I have worked on interstate gas lines. They vary in size but are far reaching. They have rights of way similar to railroads but much more extensive. You would be amazed at the gas line network. If you think about it, those rights of way would be an ideal network in which to install fibre optic cables.

The gas lines are laid at 5' depthes except when passing under roads, then it's 8', as dictated by DOT.
Teneco (formaly Tennesee Gas)installed a 10" line to intels fab in MA.
Of course DOT would have to approve.
