Democrats Resist a Taunt From Boehner

[WSJ Campaign 2006] As Republicans try to paint themselves as stronger supporters of the war on terror this election season, House Majority Leader John Boehner (R., Ohio) leveled sharp criticism against lawmakers on the other side of the aisle. “I wonder if [Democrats] are more interested in protecting the terrorists than protecting the American people,” Boehner said, speaking at a briefing with reporters today. “They certainly do not want to take the terrorists on and defeat them.”

Democrats, meanwhile, tried to avoid being drawn into the fight. When asked about Boehner’s remarks, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Boehner’s a “good guy. I like him. But haven’t we moved beyond that?” –Sarah Lueck
