I got around 9 3/4% in 1975 for my first home. Of course, the house was 1 hour north of Santa Barbara and cost 25k. I could easily make the mortgage payment with one weeks pay and still have cash for groceries and gas. I think I was making $6.50 hour plus some production bonuses. My wife did not work and we were able to save quite a bit. That is not gonna happen today.
