Big auto and big oil together killed fuel conservation. Without Bushie big oil's gluttony and greed though big auto would reluctantly have let the measures go through, especially if the Bush GOP had had the sense to back the CAFE standards instead of more and more blind addiction to oil over-consumption. As a result of this corruption, big auto is now in deep-deep trouble and big oil is swimming in a lake of ill-gotten profits.
