I like the way the ancient Hebrews treated God. They were afraid to say the very name of God, they were afraid to approach God's inner sanctum. Even though they believed that they were God's chosen people, they were humble around God.
And God was patient with them, tried not to scare them to death, appeared as a burning bush, sent angels as emissaries, performed miracles so they'd believe it was God talking to them.
Protestants, on the other hand, especially American Protestants, think that God's their best buddy, they have His private number on the speed dial on their cell phone, and God tells them everything, personally, arranges everything for them, personally, does whatever they ask, just like that, like their own personal valet or something.
They've got all the answers, no muss, no fuss, no wrestling with inner demons, not even dark hours of the soul. |
