Actually Grace, after looking a little deeper, you were completely off base and my personal experience was representative for the U.S. as a whole during the late 70s. Note that these figures would look even better if not for the changes made to the unemployment figures during the Reagan and Clinton administrations.

In fact the late seventies were across the board a low unemployment period.
