The real world is not quite as clear as your example, nor are the decisions to be made by policymakers as easy as the one you like to lay out. Nuance, ProTaliban, drives our lives and our decisions. You can't see the difference between your silly example and choices made affecting innocents thousands of miles away. At least McCain, Warner, Powell and Graham can understand nuance and consequences of simple solutions to complex problems. It would appear Mr. Bush can't..
I know you don't see it that way. Based on YOUR reading of morality, which is absolutely right of course and without nuance, you would outlaw activities like drinking and smoking. Sounds very Taliban to me....rather than leaving the choices of an individual to the individual unless harm to others is not only possible...but likely. That is what the Republicans USED to stand for. It was a core tenant of republican philosophy. Not any more, because the new moralists are going to tell all of us whether we can have a cigar, or a beer, or consensual sex with another adult.
