Well, it all depends on what and who one considers to be the popular wisdon. If one only looks at those attending the San Diego COM+ convention (a couple of thousand developers) then sure one may say the popular belief would be what is stated above. However an analogy can be made: back in 1942-45 (I was not even born then and this is based on what I have read and believe to be the truth), most Germans in a Nazi closed society strongly believed in themselves as being the gods of universe! That belief however as we all know ended very quickly (although via a painful process) by the more open democratic nations such as the US, England, France, and (even Russia at the time), with of course US being the leader of the pact. Similarly in the WinTel battle with a more open technology such as Java, I believe strongly (of course in my own opinion), that Sun (i.e. the US) and its partners (i.e. Oracle, IBM, Informix, Sybase, and practically the whole world!) will put an end to the monopolistic closed world of Wintel and its illusions of godhood!
However once it is all over Microsoft will be accepted as it will abide to the new rules of the computing model (similar to how Germany at the end surrounded and now does in fact belong to the democratic civilized world - despite the fact that it is no longer permitted to have great global powers - such as not being allowed to have a veto power in the security council of the United Nations - simply because of its past uncivilized and non-human behavior)!!
