Yes, you hit the nail on the head with Solzenitsyn. He was a brilliant chronicler, and showed incredible courage in his choice of subject matter, but as you say was unable to knit it into a workable worldview that could provide a praxis to deal effectively with the horrific circumstances he described so well, or situate them in a useful explanatory embed.

So it's the courage to challenge the status quo, plus sheer enjoyment of his wonderful writing, that I took from Solzhenitsyn.

Speaking of Joyce, maybe I'll read another few pages of Finnegan's Wake this weekend. I try to get through a couple of pages a year. Maybe when my mind is starting to go I'll be able to speed read through the rest.

It IS definitely time for me to read Ulysses again. I try to read it again as soon as I have forgotten enough of the previous read. But I like to read Ulysses straight through with as little interruption as possible so it will probably be the Xmas holidays before I get a chance. I'm a speed reader so maybe someday I'll rest up beforehand and try to get through it in the same length of time as the events described in the book.

I'm glad you had at least one Canadian on your list, as well as at least one person who appeared in a Woody Allen movie.
