The number 60,000 is a number I heard used by Glasser in a radio interview. He said in the interview that if a Humvee is hit by a IED then those people are counted as wounded in action, but if the Humvee behind them takes evasive action or hits them or in some way crashes as a result of being close to the IED then that second Humvee would be listed as a motor vehicle accident (the official numbers of wounded have a high number of motor vehicle accidents). Glasser says that 60,000 soldiers have been medevac'd he did not spend enough time on this for me to catch his source.

By the way, Glasser's may line of observation is that the severely wounded in Vietnam died while the severely wounded in Iraq live -- they just live without arms and legs and functioning brains. He also estimates that there are 200,000 people suffering from post traumatic stress as a result of serving in Iraq. He also notes that there are no follow-up services for mental problems for those who served after being called up from the reserves.
