Alignment is no item here.

If you change the phases of the respective signals feeding the antennas, the effective radiation pattern of the array is reinforced in a desired direction.

In this way it's possible to align the lightbeam with an accuracy of 1 nanometer.

It doesn't matter if these signals to the antennas are electronic or optical.
You can change the phase of the incoming visible laserbeam as well.

In the Harvard design they use two gold-coated nano rods separated by a 30-nanometer gap.
In this way you can focus the light from a normal standard solid state laser to a spot just 40 nanometers wide.

If you use silver for instance you are able to focus the light even better.

Thousands of nano antennas on one substrate could probably do the job very well.
