If you could "win" using torture and repression, the USSR would have won in Afghanistan. Bush may not be able to remember back that far, but I can. Torture and repression are not the tools of a "democracy". They are the tools of tyrants, dictators, and genocidal maniacs.

It is amusing, in the darkest sense of the word, that we "freed" the world from that horrible tyrant Saddam Hussein, only to unleash mass killings in Iraq, and try to turn in to torturers ourselves. Even if torture worked, it would be wrong. But we know it doesn't work. We know from history that people will confess to anything when being tortured. You could go back to the reign of just about any king of England pre 1700 to figure that out.
