What the Pope actually did was state that he was 'Sorry for the reaction' to his comments and clarified that these are not his feelings about Muslims but a quote from an ancient Bizzentine ruler.

I posted about that yesterday, anticipating the pope's action and the reaction to it. This fits the pattern. "Sorry" comes across differently to people expecting an apology than to people offering an explanation.

I hold the media responsible for much of the confusion and the reactions.

Labeling the explanation/condolence statement as an apology is unhelpful. But the real problem was his having said it in the first place.

(Seems to me you and I have participated in discussions of "sorry" before.)
