Even then, if we continue to use hydrocarbons to generate electricity to charge the batteries, I question whether real progress would be made.

We are now directly converting the energy in hydrocarbons to kinetic energy. With the electric car, we would be converting hydrocarbon energy into (electrical) alternating-current (AC) energy, then converting AC energy into direct-current (DC) energy, and then DC energy into kinetic energy.

There is energy loss in any energy conversion, so we may be actually consuming more total energy with the electric car than with a gasoline car. And if that's true, we would also be causing more pollution.

I hope that the reality is different, but if it is different, it would have to be due to the gasoline engine being less efficient than the other conversions.
