1400's are a brilliant, rugged, beautiful machines. (For the record, I like the form factor better than the 3400s.)

FYI, 5300s refurbs that've been through the Apple reconditioning program aren't bad. They can be gotten from the low to high $1k range.
I do suggest keeping AppleCare current for about $200/year.

Still too rich? Pick up an e-mate 300. They do most everything most people need a laptop to do for $800 ($1,000 with modem.)
