He was already in the Navy on a boat when he volunteered to do coastal duty in Vietnam. But he tried his hardest to avoid going into the service alltogether. That's a fact. It's a fact that he received multiple deferments, like Cheney. And it's a fact that his final deferment request to continue his studies in Paris was rejected. And it's a fact that he joined the Navy Reserves when he got his draft notice.
