It is by far the most important for violent crime. If you look at overall crime including illegal drugs, petty theft, prostitution and other, non-violent and often even victimless crimes, you are correct. But when you count only murder, assault, rape, etc. it maps very closely to the economy. Look over the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports and compare them to employment figures.
