It is painfully obvious that the Muslim culture is living in a different century. For anyone to be overly concerned about the reaction is missing the point........it is almost comical. It is not weak to confront the problems of Islam. It is not weak when you try to have some kind of dialogue, or to try for a beginning. It is not weak for everyone to peacefully address the underlying issues that divide us, without which the causes of violence and terrorism will continue. It is not weak to try. The Pope knows these things. With the exception of a few, I don't see anyone else stepping forward and trying. Probably because they would be insulted, or disenfranchised, or ignored, or have to go into hiding. It is no wonder that the PC crowd moans and whines and talks about how destructive it is to do so. The apparently motive-less PC crowd. The Muslim reactionaries remind me of children holding hands being led through a maze being told that if they let go of each other they will be lost forever or worse their families will beaten and tortured to death in front of their eyes. The problem we are dealing with is intrinsic to the Muslim religion. Their leaders demand ignorance and intolerance........their puppets don't know it and so remain indignant and adamant. For anyone to feign surprise that portions of the Muslim population would react the way they did ignores the fact that Islam has very deep problems that need fixing. And to deny the opportunity to talk together, regardless of hurt feelings, goes against everything our civilization has learned. The only way to do that is to confront them directly and ask: is this not possible? Go ahead and insult me.......you already have......but I ask.......IS THIS NOT POSSIBLE? The NYTs in their naivete or cowardliness asks its readers: is Islam a violent religion? This is good. By his actions, the Pope has raised questions. Intellectuals will try to answer. Maybe the entire world's population will pay attention to the scholars? Maybe some Muslims will start questioning? This too is good. Like most everyone else, I would rather solve this problem peacefully, so I do not give up. And I will not shut my mouth. Thankfully..........neither will the Pope.
