There's lots of oil still and low-hanging fruit is prolific in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran if politically it's available. Production can increase for quite some time yet. Way back in 1987 I came up with the idea of squashing power station exhaust into liquid CO2 and piping it 400 metres under the ocean to stay in liquid phase in a nice big puddle, ready to go back into sedimentary oceanic crust and subduction. I didn't realize such obvious things could be patented, but a few years later [maybe 1989] Mitsubishi patented exactly that. The patent has pretty much expired, so it's not as though they have us cornered. The energy cost wouldn't be all that great [my boe calculation was some 20% extra energy would be needed to do that]. I had previously thought freezing it into dry ice and making big mountains of it near power stations would be a good idea; handy skifields! It would need insulation to reduce ablation rate. But the liquid phase seemed better. Putting CO2 in the hole where the oil came from isn't going to use more than a little of it. A litre of heavy oil produces a LOT of CO2, even in liquid phase.
