The "thousands of soldiers" statement, while literally true, eclipses the fact that there are only about 12,000 of them in Afghanistan, and about 160,000 of them in Iraq.

Your statement doesn't make a lot of sense. Perhaps you used the wrong verb, or used it in the wrong way. The way your wrote it isn't an argument for the point your trying to make. Maybe your meant "is eclipsed by". I'll respond assuming you did.

Its not eclipsed by it at all. Had Iraq never happened, if no one even gave a thought to invading Iraq we never would have put 160k soldiers in to Afghanistan. The situations are different.
