With the turmoil in the Teamsters Union, the question of an early settlement is anybody's guess. I do know that both parties involved realize a strike would be the end of the Union driver as well as the Unionized trucking concerns.
I personally believe that they will have a contract in hand by April 1st.
One other point is that the pension will change with the new contract and hundreds of CFWY drivers will retire next year. CF has been around a long time and so have some of their employees. The company will lose a lot of five week vacation men and that will mean big savings in 97-98.
New hires are at a cheaper rate (like five dollars per hour) and get gradual raises until they get to top step. They also get one week vacation (also at a much lower rate) two weeks after two years and three weeks after eight years. I don't know the exact figures, but in my location there will be seven drivers out of forty-four or roughly fifteen percent that will retire with the next contract. If they replace all of them with new hires they would be saving $1400 per week not counting overtime. Again, I repeat, that I don't have any idea what this would mean company wide, but it should be substantial.
Hope this sheds some light on your Corn Flakes.
Nice to hear from you.
Keep on trucking! Union of course.
Jack
P.S. I will be one of the seven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
