NEW YORK: While only 6 per cent of the adult population in the U.S. had done any form of cosmetic surgery, almost 20 per cent of the population hope to do it at some point in the future, according to the 2006 consumer perception survey of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

The results indicate that the perception has changed significantly since the 1960s and 1970s, says Jeff Knezovich, executive vice president of the academy. At that time, cosmetic surgery was "rarely talked about," he said, but it is now a hot topic.

The survey also provided insights into people's perceptions about cosmetic surgery. For example, the survey found that only about half of the respondents knew about the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon. To this extent, there is need for patient education on the intricate aspects of cosmetic surgery, the academy felt.
