i think you are right about that, brian, however i would also say that to me it appears that the islamists have been jonesing for a 'religious' war for YEARS, goading the west over and over with terrorist attacks (which basically were proxy war tactics stemming from islamic states which recognize that any full on, straightforward attack against western democracy would result in their annilation)...
then came 9/11 and the bush doctrine which was basically a declaration of war against the terrorists and the states that harbor them (nice rhetoric at the time, but considering our tepid response to the nuclear aspirations of iran, i think we are back to business as usual)
unfortunately, i think we have lost our political will since 9/11 to launch any full on attack on islamofasicsm and have allowed the politicians and even worse, state department to run the war against the islamist/jihadists, iow, the PC kid gloves are on, and as we know wrt islamists, NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED....
hence, sadly, expect another 9/11 style attack with thousands dead before we regain our political will to give them the religious war they aspire to
