They're not very thick, 20ga is about right. They get most of their strength due to the fact that they are corrugated. They deflect somewhat when you walk on them before the concrete is poured. That said, they certainly should not vaporize under any sort of impact and I'm sure they didn't. They probably tore into fairly small pieces (3' x 3' for example) as the joists and concrete and everything else collapsed and turned into a big jumbled mess.

I don't know why you don't see pieces of the deck in the photos of the site. What is your theory on that, that they didn't exist in the first place, or that explosions disintegrated them?
