I also think some effort is needed to articulate the views of the center that have remained underformed. As one example, I don't think that most people believe that we ought to be torturing innocent people.

From what I have seen, nearly half of America is quite willing to torture anyone they can to make themselves sleep better at night and feel safer. If you feel that view is "unformed" then you are advocating an agenda where you want the center to go, not looking for where they are.

The ME tangle is a perfect example where every issues has 3-4 sides and 15 versions of "the truth" depending on who you talk to. For people in the middle, they see a scary muddle; they want to be decent, but they don't want to be blown up either.

The center is about finding a way to balance all the concerns AND have an effective policy at the same time. Most ME debate is like I said, one guy bashing another for defending something awful and never putting the issue into a more balanced context.

Your last sentence reflects what I emphasized in my last post, which is that many people want to believe they are the center while anything to either side is extreme. But until you can point out that your views have resonance in the swing voter group, there is no substantiation for the claim.
