Thanks.

Just prior to the time Al-Sadr and his followers were under siege in Ali's Mosque, Moqtada Al-Sadr had been preaching to his followers that the 12th Imam was preparing to appear. He told them that he was aware of Mahdi's (the 12th) presence. That had a huge impact on how the seige turned out.

Here you had a couple of hundred insurgents backing Al-Sadr in this Mosque, exchanging bullits with the most powerful super power and its coalition allies the world has ever known, in defiance of the USA and the Coalition.

The High Mullah Sistani made a grand appearance walking through the city and finally negotiating a cease fire (not surrender). Al-Sadr told his followers that the real reason the USA is in Iraq is because we hope to murder the Mahdi when he appears. He told his followers that we will lay down our guns for now but we are not surrendering nor will we agree to disban. The reason: He claims no one can disban Mahdi's Army, not even him. So he said, we will now begin recruiting for Al-Mahdi Army which will eventually rule the world via a Khaliphate government.

Al-Sadr was the only insurgent that was ever allowed to just walk away and continue his operations elsewhere. Most people here figured Al-Sadr's balloon had lost its air, but if you watch the news, you will notice every once in a while the Al-Mahdi forces reappear stronger and more credible each time.

The Iraqis describe Al-Sadr's form of leadership and coming to power as 'quiet'. We found that he has an entire government of laws, judges, prisons etc that were shadowing the official government. Many people loyal to him are in the official government.

I'm sure the Iranians see what happened at Ali's Mosque as no less than miraculous. I'm also sure that it is part of what has emboldened Amedinajad.
