Yep, we do read the same stuff, Win. I read that and thought it was just a rehash of the same old stuff. Not one of her better bits of work.

But she's so much better than the general run of writers, that it's fun just to see the style at work.

As for whether it's appropriate, Dale will have to decide. My own internal criteria on these things is that so long as they bring something new to the conversation and are sufficiently analytical, not just beating the old partisan drum. Didion always passes the smell test for me.

The one I considered posting even more was Timothy Garten Ash's piece on Muslims in Europe. I'm about halfway through and am terribly impressed. It's not an argument one sees around here all that much. As nuanced as one would expect from someone who sits in an academic chair at Oxbridge but much more compassionate than those usually are.

If you don't get it up soon, I may take a shot. Even if it's just the link. In fact, the link might be best. It's terribly long. But with some sort of teaser--opening paragraph, closing, something.
