It struck me as funny that someone thinks the "visual aspect" of Oprah's show is that important. I guess for the Tom Cruise moments it is.

I think there is a pretty big misunderstanding about what this channel is. Yes, Winfrey will make some appearances. But the people who watch her show and are committed fans follow these "friends" closely.

The XM program gives these people an opportunity to interact with these people. I cannot think of anything more boring than All Oprah All The Time (it would be as bad as All Stern All the Time).

I have no use for her or the show. But the reality is that she has a huge following. Just as with Stern, it is unlikely that her millions of fans will follow her and her friends to XM. But some portion will.

I don't find that the number of subscribers a particular content item brings is an appropriate metric for performance. Some content items would not, on their own, bring subscribers -- but form an important part of the package. For example, Sirius has no 40s or Folk or soundtrack programming -- the numbers aren't huge, but these are pretty essential if one wants to have a well-rounded music offering.

That said, I believe Winfrey's show is likely to bring XM more subscribers per dollar spent than Stern will bring Sirius per dollar spent.

Winfrey will still have access to her existing audience for the full three year period of her show. Stern cannot attract new subscribers to Sirius now because only Sirius listeners can hear him.
