i'm not an expert on this stuff of course, but I'm imagining that the H.264 codec is 'scalable' - it can convert to any video quality upto HDTV & down to ipod video. Sophisticated software is needed. I remember at MacWorld jan-2006 there was some buzz about this. I'm guessing that software is being developed to convert video(from a tuner say) to H.264 and from H.264 to video, with file save dall in the mac and its hard drives.
