Syria is weak militarily compared to Israel.

Let's say the Israelis were too discombobulated by the Hezbollah missiles to be able to execute their plan to perfection

In war plans, at least large scale plans, are rarely executed to perfection.

"No plan survives first contact with the enemy."
Helmuth von Moltke

"The enemy gets a vote."

Hezbollah apparently had some capabilities that Israel didn't know about, but Israel did have a lot of knowledge about Hezbollah, and Syria and Iran for that matter. If their national leadership was so arrogant as to think it impossible for any resistance not to crumble almost at once than they where fools. If they knew that resistance might not crumble but they pulled back just as they where getting rolling than they were dithering and indecisive. Either way the main problem with Israel's war effort was its national leadership.
