I agree with your assessment.

I have lived in various parts Asia over a 10-year period, and I have come across not a few Asian women with the 'chip' and also not a few henpecked husbands. This is not to say there are no henpecked husbands in the west. There are, and those who were beaten by their wives were too ashamed to report them to the authorities.
