Thanks for all the advice on the external hard drive issue.
I have wrapped my head around this thing and did some research on the net on external hard drives.
First thing, you can get a lot of storage for relatively cheap. The Fantom drive that I bought three months ago (250 GIG) for $99.99 can now be had at Newegg.com for $89.99. So, in thinking about my transportation problem, what I really need is not a hard drive that is build to withstand falling off the Empire State Building as much as a case to carry the thing in to protect it should I drop it again. What I need is a small aluminum case with foam inserts. That should not be a big thing. In fact, I located one for $40 that would work, but I think I am going to attempt to save some ching and retrofit a case I have at home and see if I can make that work.
In researching drives I found that most are very happy with the Fantom drives and that they are indeed reliable. A two foot drop to a marble floor is not something most hard drives would tolerate. I liked what I saw from the Lacie External Hard Drives, but they used Maxtor drives in their configuration, so thanks to one poster, I eliminated that drive.
I ended up buying two 250 GIG Fantom drives. I will store my music, ebooks, and any other entertainment content on them. One will become a true backup drive, having copies of that material, as well as my other stuff. One will be become my entertainment drive that I will transport from home to office and back.
This should work nicely.
Thanks for all the commentary on my little issue.
