Alarm at Perth land verdict

22-Sep-06

ABORIGINES have set their sights on more big Australian cities as the government warned a landmark court decision giving them native title to Perth could have significant implications.

Claims have already been lodged for rights to the country's largest city, Sydney, as well as Melbourne in the south and Brisbane on the east coast, officials said.

The surprise federal court judgment on the Western Australian capital, Perth, on Tuesday marked the first time a large metropolitan area had been ruled to belong to the indigenous people.

THE shock Federal Court ruling giving Aborigines native title over Perth has split the Labor Party, appearing to put national president Warren Mundine at odds with leader Kim Beazley.

As legal experts warned that Brisbane and Melbourne could be next on the native title hit list, Mr Beazley's swift support for a state appeal against the court decision outraged indigenous Labor members.
