No, I didn't forget anything that was relevant to the point. Have you ever known any German Jews from that period (or Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, Austrian, etc.--they were all shipped out)? I have. Many. Most of my closest friends for some reason have been children of people who were kicked out, luckily left before the shit hit the fan, and whose parents still have the numbers engraved on their arm. My father-in-law is one. They aren't, for the most part, especially observant Jews. But they remained Jews. They live in Jewish neighborhoods. Many of them go to synagogues occasionally, contribute to and work for Jewish charities (my father would say, "I've never seen a Christian work for Jewish charities" when I asked him why he spent much of his free time working at 2 particular organizations). She was in the US, not Tunisia anymore. A different place. Still anti-semitic and restrictive, for sure, when Allen was growing up and when she came here. But not dangerous, except in a few neighborhoods.

Oh, nevermind, what's the difference. For heaven's sake, Madeleine Albright's parents did the same thing--and he was a fairly well known guy. How they kept that a secret from her I have no idea. And why they kept it a secret--it makes me nauseous.
