String theory, quantum mechanics, quarks, bosons, muons and all those esoteric particles are just beyond my understanding. I read about them as much as I can in popular literature, but it's a stretch. I mean, I used to think I understood the hydrogen atom as one with one proton, one neutron, and one electron. Now I find out it is like

I loved Carl Sagan's series on the Cosmos and have his book. It's pretty understandable, but probably way out of date by now.

Carl Sagan put his foot in his mouth when he came out to Oregon while I was there and said "cutting trees is dumb." Oregon is the best place in the world to grow wood, and I was deeply involved in doing that. Sagan probably wouldn't like it if I said astronomy is nothing but the futile efforts of a bunch of stargazers. Cutting trees for no reason might be dumb, but growing trees for wood and other products is a worthy and honorable enterprise.
