It's pathetic that anyone in this day and age in the US of A can't say that they're Jewish. Totally pathetic.

It's more subtle than that. When a person keeps a secret for 10 years [his mother], it's "reflex" to keep the secret for 20 years. After ~60 years the secret is integrated into the very being of the person. They can't think of it as not being a secret.

A friend of mine in his 50's discovered that he had a brother he never knew about [infant mortality]. If he mentions it to his mother, she goes glassy eyed on him and won't acknowledge it, let alone discuss it.

As a third party, we can look at the instance as not anything to be ashamed of. Infant mortalities happen; sometimes for no known reason which we may call Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. After 50 years, it's no longer the event that controls the person but the secret that controls them.

For Sen Allen, it's a different dynamic. A third party, The Forward knows something about his mother that he doesn't know. "Why didn't she tell me, I'm her son?". I think it would be a quite natural human reaction to at least temporarily try to conceal the secret as you try to resolve the reasoning yourself.

People are focusing on the Jewishness; it's the wrong focus. It's the human condition of keeping secrets over long periods of time regardless of what the secret is to begin with. Then it's the dynamics of the adult dealing with the discovery of a secret which he thinks he should have known all along.

Once you go down the path of his Jewish heritage as the focus this is where you can head.....
