House panel embraces "25 by '25" energy goal Thu Sep 21, 1:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congress could set a goal of deriving 25 percent of all U.S. energy from renewable sources -- biofuels and hydro, wind and solar power -- by 2025 under a resolution approved by the House of Representatives' Agriculture Committee on Thursday.

Chairman Bob Goodlatte said the goal would allow farmers to "make a larger contribution to our nation's energy supply." The nonbinding "sense of Congress" resolution now goes to the House for a vote.

Corn-based ethanol is the best-known renewable fuel, with output estimated to double, to 10 billion gallons (38 billion liters), by 2010. Bio-diesel production is growing rapidly.

Overall, renewable sources provide 6 percent of U.S. energy, said Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican and sponsor of the resolution.

"The goal is actually small. I think we can do better than this," said Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson (news, bio, voting record), Democratic leader on the panel and a co-sponsor.
